The medieval church had been used as a cistern for over 100 years and was badly damaged and partially buried. During renovation parts of an ancient roman building emerged. The architect wanted to show the wounds the building experienced throughout the centuries. This becomes most evident in the decision not to rebuild the damaged apse.
